Amidst growing curiosity around her upcoming projects since Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s historical blockbuster Padmaavat, it has emerged that Deepika Padukone is gearing up to frontline Bollywood’s first female superhero franchise.
With the first two instalments mounted on a whopping Rs 300 crore, the yetuntitled project is a high-octane sci-fi story and is currently at the conception stage with the script in the works.
The makers are drawing inspiration from Hollywood’s Gal Gadot-starrer Wonder Woman franchise for the film and Deepika’s costume.
“Deepika’s avatar is being fashioned after Gal Gadot’s in Wonder Woman. The developments have been kept under wraps with a creative team holding discreet meetings with Deepika on a regular basis. Presently, a running bid is on for Rs 300 crore among multiple investors,” a source close to the development informed Mirror.
“The 32-year-old-actress will begin training extensively in mixed martial arts and different styles of hand-to-hand combat. Since this is a first-of-its-kind mega project, the timelines for pre-production will be long and the project will go on the floors next year,” the source added.
Meanwhile, costume sketches and the storyboard are also being finalised with Deepika taking an active interest in every detail of the project. “The costume will be sexy, not contrived or gimmicky. Since Deepika has an envious figure, a special outfit is being designed for her character which will be custom-made to facilitate hardcore physical combat and movement,” the source pointed out.
Meanwhile, Deepika, who recently returned to Hollywood to make an appearance at the annual MET Gala after her 2017 debut opposite Vin Diesel in xXx: Return of Xander Cage, is being courted by director DJ Caruso to reprise her role in another sequel.
On homeground, she was to kick off Vishal Bhardwaj’s next with Irrfan Khan that takes off from a story, Femme Fatale, from Hussain Zaidi’s book, Mafia Queens of Mumbai, after the release of Padmaavat. But VB put the film on hold in February in the wake of his leads’ health problems.
